Discipline & Touch Policy

* The provider will discipline in a consistent manner, based on each child's individual needs, behaviour and varying developmental level. Simple, understandable rules will be established so that expectations and limitations are clearly defined.

* Discipline will be constructive in nature and will include such methods as: problem solving, diversions & redirection, separation of child from situation, temporary loss of priveledges, praise of appropriate behaviour and time out to play independantly with a quiet activity.

* The child will not be punished by: spanking, pinching, shaking or other forms of corporal punishment; being isolated for long periods of time; confinement in closets, boxes or similar places; binding to restrain movement of mouth or limb; humiliation or verbal abuse; deprivation of meals, snacks, outdoor play opportunities or other program components.

* Short-term restrictions from the use of specific play materials and equipment or participation in a specific activity are permissable.

* The child will not be punished for lapses in toilet training or for refusing food. Highchairs and cribs will not be used for discipline purposes.

* Biting Policy will focus on modifying the child's behaviour within the daycare setting and work cooperatively with the parents to identify alternate strategies.

APPROPRIATE TOUCHES INCLUDE

* Recognition of the importance of physical contact and child nurturance and guidance.

* Adult respect for personal privacy and personal space of children.

* Responses affecting the safety and well being of the child (ie. holding hands with the child while crossing the stret, holding child gently during temper tantrum)

* Hugs, lap-sitting, reassuring touches on the shoulder and naptime back rubs.

INAPPROPRIATE TOUCHES INCLUDE

* Coercion or other forms of exploitation of the child's lack of knowledge

* Satisfaction of adult needs at the expense of the child.

* Violation of laws against sexual contact between children and adults.

* An attempt to change the child's behaviour with adult physical force, often applied in anger.
